Investing in local talent to expand our West Australian ecosystem

Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic was the demand for future skills. With two key ways to build the talent pipeline, as outlined in Brodie McCulloch’s latest blog post, the first is to attract global talent and the second is to invest in developing our local talent.

Leveraging the opportunities we have here in Australia, including it being one of the safest and most successful places in the world following the COVID-19 pandemic, is going to be a driving force behind recruiting and securing experienced talent to Perth. Through building local ventures, creating great products and delivering on great services, we’ll be able to attract other businesses in Australia to do the same.

Secondly, building and supporting local talent with the resources they need to scale. We’ve seen programs driving this force, but not to the level in which it needs to be sustainable. She Codes, Skills of the Modern Age, Startup Weekend, Plus Eight and Meshpoints are some of our programs driving these forces.

She Codes has now supported over 5,000 women in developing coding skills, and has created follow-on recruitment opportunities for women to upskill thanks to the backing of BHP, Robert Walters, RAC WA, New Industries WA, VGW, Murdoch and other local companies.

Skills of the Modern Age embrace the future of work by supporting individuals and organisations to upskill with unique tools to help you and your team get future-fit. They’ve worked with over 8,000 innovators and are continuing to explore what it takes to succeed in the future of work.

Plus Eight and Startup Weekend work to build on local ideas and get them ready to scale and succeed in a global market. Plus Eight have invested $1.08M through their accelerator program, with $10M in follow-on investments and a $81M latest portfolio valuation. While Startup Weekend has hosted 16 sold-out events in Perth, with over 100 changemakers attending each event.

With more to do across Australia to align the skills gaps with courses, workshops and training, Spacecubed is looking forward to working with business owners, industry experts and Government now, and into the future, to assist the growth requirements for our local ecosystem.
