Off the back of increased number of accelerator programs being made available to startup businesses in Perth, Australia (such as Plus Eight (muru-D), Plus Eight Sprint, Curtin Growth Ignition, Innovation Bay, and Harvest just to name a few) which are designed to provide participants with funding, increased business networks, knowledge, skills, training and mentorship, we're starting to see more and more Perth-based startups launching successful international and interstate campaigns from the West Coast.

There’s a common misconception that basing a business in a “lifestyle city” like Perth means you only need to know your local consumers. This assumption can cut you off from huge potential markets, according to Spacecubed’s Impact Manager, Chandra Sundareswaran, who coordinates the muru-D Plus Eight accelerator. “Australian startups like Canva and Atlassian have shown us that there is global market for Australian digital products. Perth's timezone and proximity to Asia makes it a great launchpad to create world-beating startups and businesses and scale quickly to Asia and beyond. Programs like Plus Eight Academy gives startups and founders with interesting business ideas an opportunity to develop their businesses and scale internationally.

We hope these startups will take their part in the thriving innovation culture in Western Australia, stepping up to take their place on the global stage, which is a critical part of our economic future” says Chandra.

Here are 5 up-and-coming tech startups from Perth to keep on your global tech radar:

Bamboo - Making their mark in the cryptocurrency scene Bamboo is forging into the microinvestment space, and their early success has been marked with an invitation to speak at the 9th Blockchain Symposium in South Korea. They are experiencing a rush of interest in the platform and are successfully and tapping into trends for low-barrier investing popular with millennials.

BeingVR - Having taken part in the Intensify accelerator as Diversifly, founder Lucie Hammond rebranded to BeingVR in order to reflect the company’s expanded offering that is seeing BeingVR take up partnerships across a range of sectors as they enter their third year of operation.

Redback Energy - Redback Energy plays in the emerging nanogrid space, having developed an IoT integrated inverter that rivals Tesla for the domestic market.
